چکیده

There is lack of consensus in the literature regarding the extent of virus-particle associations in waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) and the implications for virus removal. In this study, the associations of F+ coliphage (measured with the double agar layer plaque assay) and human adenovirus (measured via quantitative PCR) with WSP particles of different sizes were analyzed using a cascade filtration approach using filters with pore sizes of 180 μm, 0.45 μm, and a positively-charged membrane with a pore size of 0.20 μm. Samples were collected from an active WSP system in Michigan, USA consisting of an anaerobic pond, two facultative ponds, and two final storage ponds. F+ coliphage was detected in the first three ponds at quantifiable levels in unfiltered samples and in the filtrate from all filters in the cascade. The differences between the F+ coliphage quantities detected prior to filtration and after the 180-μm filters were negligible and the quantities detected in the filtrate of the 0.45-μm filters were slightly less than half of the quantities detected prior to filtration. The highest quantities of human adenovirus were detected in material retained on the 0.45-μm filters and positivelycharged 0.20-μm membranes in the effluent of the anaerobic pond, indicating associations with particles smaller than 180 μm. While these results provide only a snapshot view of virusparticle associations in WSPs, they do not provide evidence that particle associations cause large differences in the extent of the removal of these viruses in WSPs. The results also do not provide evidence for sedimentation as a major removal mechanism for these viruses.

Urban development is rapidly expanding across the globe and is a major driver of environmental change. It is important to understand how bird species responds to urbanization. Therefore I conducted a qualitative study of birds associated with waste sites such as dumpsite and sewage stabilization ponds was carried out on Moshi municipal. The study assessed the diversity between dumpsite and sewa...

Removal of Fecal Indicators, Pathogenic Bacteria, Adenovirus, Cryptosporidium and Giardia (oo)cysts in Waste Stabilization Ponds in Northern and Eastern Australia.

Maturation ponds are used in rural and regional areas in Australia to remove the microbial loads of sewage wastewater, however, they have not been studied intensively until present. Using a combination of culture-based methods and quantitative real-time PCR, we assessed microbial removal rates in maturation ponds at four waste stabilization ponds (WSP) with (n = 1) and without (n = 3) baffles i...

Baffle and fixed media effects on coliform removal and bacterial die-off rate coefficient in waste stabilization ponds (a case study in Ahvaz)

Background: The use of waste stabilization ponds is one of the cheapest wastewater treatment processes. This study evaluated the effects of baffles and fixed media on coliform removal in facultative lagoons. Methods: In this study, the settled wastewater from four pond systems of the city of Ahvaz was used as input. Each system was composed of two ponds that were connected to each other serial...

Sludge accumulation, characteristics, and pathogen inactivation in four primary waste stabilization ponds in central Mexico.

To support the development of safe and feasible sludge management strategies, the accumulation rates of sludge and its characteristics were studied in four primary wastewater stabilization ponds (WSPs) in central Mexico (three facultative and one anaerobic). The accumulation rates and distribution of sludge were determined by measuring the thickness of the sludge layer at 8-40 locations through...

Prediction of the waste stabilization pond performance using linear multiple regression and multi-layer perceptron neural network: a case study of Birjand, Iran

Background: Data mining (DM) is an approach used in extracting valuable information from environmental processes. This research depicts a DM approach used in extracting some information from influent and effluent wastewater characteristic data of a waste stabilization pond (WSP) in Birjand, a city in Eastern Iran. Methods: Multiple regression (MR) and neural network (NN) models were examined u...
